The Williston Park Little League 11/12-year-old Tournament Team advanced to the 2003 Glen Cove Mayor’s Trophy Championship Game this past Saturday. 16 of the top 12-year-old tournament teams from Long Island participated in this year’s Glen Cove Mayor’s Trophy Tournament and Williston Park advanced to the Title Game by defeating a Manhasset team that had won the 2003 Little League District-28 Championship along with winning the recent 2003 HBQVB Nick Lomangino Tournament. Entering the game, Manhasset also was undefeated (7-0) in the Glen Cove Tournament.

In the important Playoff Game, District Champion Manhasset jumped off to a quick 1-0 lead with an infield hit, stolen base, and clutch 2-out single in the 1st inning. Williston Park went scoreless in the first three innings and trailed 1-0. In the top of the 4th inning, Chris McCormick and John Urbank then singled, followed by an RBI by Pat Martinucci to tie the game at 1-1.

Williston Park then exploded for 3 runs in the top of the 5th inning to take a commanding 4-1 lead behind a walk to Matt Malley and singles by Rich Doyle, Andrew Kelty, Danny Martinucci, and Chris McCormick. The Williston Park starting pitcher, Chris Serrano, then shutdown Manhasset hitless over the final 4 innings to seal the victory for Williston Park. The game was exciting throughout and also included several nice defensive plays by TJ Arsenault, Danny McEnery, Tom Rynne, and Matt Lanfair.

The huge win over undefeated Manhasset propelled Williston Park to the Glen Cove Championship Game in the 16-team tournament for the second year in a row.

In the Championship Game, Williston Park put up a valiant fight behind the strong pitching of TJ Arsenault in the 90-plus degree heat but the team fell to Levittown North.

It was an exciting summer of baseball for the talented members of the 2003 Williston Park 11/12-year-old Tournament team. The team played 21 games since early-July and they were very successful in four tournaments. The boys and coaches will now take some well-deserved time off as they enjoy the rest of the summer!
