Williston Park 11/12 Tournament Team Advances! Following a very successful 2002 tournament season, the Williston Park Little League 11/12-year-old Tournament Team has continued the winning ways in Summer 2003. The team includes five members of the 2002 Team that won three championships. For 2003, the 11/12 Tournament Team participated in the 2003 Little League Willamsport Tournament and they’re currently participating in the 2003 Glen Cove Mayors Trophy Tournament, the 2003 HBQVB Nick Lomangino Tournament, and the 20th Annual Mid-Island Tournament. Since the Williamsport Tournament, the 11/12 Tournament Team has played 16 games in the past 24 days and they’ve compiled an impressive 12-4 record, against some very strong opponents. Some highlights … In the Mid-Island Tournament, Williston Park defeated the strong Merrick Williamsport team by a score of 2-1 in 8 innings. The game was tense throughout and was highlighted by the strong pitching of Pat Martinucci, TJ Arsenault, and Chris McCormick; the strong defense of Danny McEnery, Danny Martinucci, and Andrew Kelty; and the timely game-winning hit by Matt Lanfair in the bottom of the 8th inning. In the HBQVB Nick Lomangino Tournament, the most exciting victory has been the defeat of powerhouse Ozone Howard. Ozone Howard had won each of their previous 2003 tournaments, they’d mercied (won by greater then 10 runs) all of their previous HBQVB opponents, and they were next headed to a championship tournament in Pennsylvania. Williston Park took an early 2-0 lead behind singles by John Urbank and Pat Martinucci followed by RBI singles by Chris Serrano and Matt Malley. Ozone Howard then tied the game 2-2 in the 4th inning, and the game remained a pitcher’s duel until the bottom of the 9th inning. With darkness approaching, Tom Rynne then knocked in the game-winning run to seal the exciting 3-2 victory. The game also included the strong pitching of Chris Serrano and TJ Arsenault, along with the brilliant defense of Chris McCormick, Matt Lanfair, Matt Malley, and Brendan Reynolds. In the Glen Cove Mayors Trophy Tournament, Williston Park has a 5-1 record, which includes a most impressive win over Levittown North. The game was the late-night (8:30pm start) highlight of the Glen Cove Tournament with Chris Serrano of Williston Park matching Levittown North’s ace pitch-for-pitch through 7 innings. The game was tied 1-1 through 7 innings, when (per the rules) both starters needed to be removed. In the top of the 8th inning, Williston Park exploded for 4 runs behind RBI’s by John Urbank, Rich Doyle, and Chris McCormick. TJ Arsenault then shutdown Levittown North in the bottom of the 8th inning to seal the 5-1 victory for Williston Park. It’s been an enjoyable, busy, and successful summer for the 2003 Williston Park Little League 11/12-year old Tournament Team which is coached by Lou Lanfair, Ken Martinucci, and Steve Serrano.
